Holistic treatments:
Swedish Massage
Swedish massage is the most commonly offered and best known type of massage. It was developed by a Swedish physiologist, Henri Peter Ling at the University of Stockholm in 1812. It uses a firm but gentle pressue to improve the circulation, ease muscle aches and tension, improve flexibility and create relaxation.
Swedish massage employs five different movements:
* long, gliding strokes
* kneading of individual muscles
* friction
* hacking or tapping
* vibration
The therapist generally uses massage oil to facilitate making long, smooth strokes over the body. Swedish massage is done with the person covered by a sheet, a technique called "draping". One part of the body uncovered, massaged, and then covered up before moving on to another part of the body.
Swedish massage is the foundation for other types of Western massage, including sports, deep tissue and aromatherapy.
Aromatherapy
Many people mistakenly
think of aromatherapy as a ‘beauty’ treatment, but nothing could be
further from the truth. Aromatherapy is recognised by many health
professionals and practised in hospitals, GP’s surgeries and hospices
all over this country. GP’s have been referring patients to
complementary therapists since 1992. Quite simply they know that
aromatherapy works. Aromatherapists today are trained to a very high
standard and have passed exams in all their subjects including human
anatomy and physiology.
Aromatherapy combines the use of essential oils and therapeutic
massage. The oils, which come from plants, are highly concentrated and
very powerful. Essential oils possess natural healing properties –
without harmful side-effects. Aromatherapy is helpful for many health
conditions, but there are two areas where it excels:
Stress. We all know that some stress is good for us. But when the
balance is tipped, stress can very quickly take hold and start to
affect us adversely. Some people will present to an Aromatherapist with
stress, whilst others will present with the physical complaints that
arise from it; IE. disturbed sleep, anxiety, mood swings, skin rashes,
headaches, fatigue etc. A compromised immune system may mean that they
are ‘picking up’ all sorts of colds and infections. Essential oils
exert a subtle influence on the mind and combined with massage and the
care of a good therapist, they offer a truly holistic, gentle and
natural way of achieving balance in your life.
Bad Backs. Stress is also responsible for many bad backs; tensed
muscles in the upper back, neck and shoulders lead to spasm, pain and
discomfort. Aromatherapy treatments help to relieve the pain and
tension and re-educate you about your back, help with your posture and
remind you to relax . Many bad backs are caused by muscular problems.
Massage is very effective here, it can break up tissue adhesion's,
improve muscle tone, boost the circulation and increase feelings of
well-being. It helps to eliminate toxins and is also useful for all
those who enjoy sports.
Aromatherapy is very effective for the relief of the following
conditions: depression and nervous tension, fatigue (including chronic)
and ME, menstrual problems, pregnancy and the menopause, poor
circulation, high blood pressure, respiratory conditions including
asthma and sinusitis, rheumatism, arthritis and joint mobility, skin
conditions.
Since times immemorial, the ancients knew the power of healing effects of using plants and herbs.
Today, even the modern science agrees with our ancestors about the
aromatherapy benefits. Most of the medicinal plants have chemically
active components which act on the organisms or the chemicals causing
discomfort in the body to provide the healing effect. The aromatherapy
benefit of essential oils can be analgesic, antidepressant, anti fungal,
anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antispasmodic, aphrodisiac, astringent,
carminative, cicatrisant, deodorant, diuretic, emmenagogue,
expectorant, fungicidal, hepatic, hypertensive, hypertensive,
immune-stimulant, nerving, rubefacient, sedative, stimulant and tonic.
Indian Head Massage
Indian Head massage, or Champissage (Champi is an original Indian word meaning head massage) is based on the ancient Ayurvedic healing system. It has been practised in India for over a thousand years, originally by women to keep their hair thick, healthy and in beautiful condition.
The treatment is carried out with the client fully clothed and whilst oil may be used but it is not necessary. The therapist works from behind the client and performs a flowing sequence of movements working over the back, neck, arms, scalp and face, helping to relieve tension, stiffness, headaches and eyestrain improving circulation and promoting a feeling of well-being.
The Massage
Indian Head Massage is carried out fully clothed sitting on a chair. It is suitable for all ages and is safe to receive during pregnancy.
A typical treatment combines massage techniques with gentle stretches in order to loosen and mobilise the muscles and joints of the arms, shoulders and neck. The scalp and face are then gently but deeply massaged. Oils can optionally be used to improve the condition of the hair.
A treatment lasts for forty minutes and includes a medical history, the actual treatment, and recommendations for diet and lifestyle. All aspects of your treatment are strictly confidential.

Reflexology
Reflexology
is a type of therapy that involves the massaging of the feet to treat
and heal an individual's entire body. It is said to be a gentle type of
therapy, used to restore the body's natural balance as well as to help
maintain its equilibrium. Sometimes, reflexology involves the hands and ears as well as the feet. In most cases, however, only the feet are involved. Historically, the use of reflexology
dates back to ancient China, Egypt, and Greece. However, it wasn't
introduced to Western civilizations until the twentieth century, when a
doctor named William Fitzgerald first introduced it to the West. He
referred to this type of treatment as zone therapy. Today, reflexology is used as a therapeutic treatment for a full range of conditions, including back pain, sports injuries, migraines, and arthritis, This type of therapy is even said to be effective in treating
infertility, digestive disorders, hormonal imbalances, and sleep
disorders. Furthermore, many believe it to be particularly helpful in
the treatment of a full range of stress-related conditions.
Reflexology is not just recognized by those interested in alternative treatments and therapies. Many medical doctors and other health care professionals also recognize it as an effective therapeutic treatment.
Some recommend it to their patients as an alternative supplement to medical care. Reflexology
is performed by a practitioner who is trained and educated in the use
of zone therapy. It is said that a trained professional reflexologist
may be able to detect subtle changes in the zones of the feet. By
applying pressure to a specific zone, a reflexologist may be able to
affect the organ or body system that is believed to correspond with
that particular zone. A reflexology
treatment typically lasts for about an hour. During this time, a
reflexologist uses his or her hands, especially the thumbs, to apply
pressure to the feet. The amount and location of the pressure, as well
as the effect of the treatment, is said to depend on the unique needs
of each individual.
